Doesn't work on IE8 - paulsmith - 03-13-2010 12:00 AM

This looks like a really useful tool, unfortunately it doesn't seem to work on IE8, despite posts I have seen that says it does.
On IE8, the AOL PageTest window comes up ok, but that's it - the Waterfall window never gets populated (it just shows + http://www.bbc.co.uk, but when expanded it just shows the test http://www.bbc.co.uk). I have tried disabling all other add-ons in case there is a conflict, but I get the same. I am using the very latest version of AOL PageTest (2.0.0.217) and IE8 version 8.0.6001.18702.
The Optimization Report shows:

What antivirus are you using? I'm working on tracking down a compatibility problem that I've seen on some desktops at my office that may be linked to McAffee interactions. What you are seeing is what happens when the API hooks can't get installed - I just haven't figured out why yet. It's not an IE8 problem though - I've seen the same issues on IE7 as well.

RE: Doesn't work on IE8 - paulsmith - 03-13-2010 01:49 AM

Thank you for replying.

I am using Symantec's Noron AntiVirus, version 16.8.0.41.

I had already tried disabling Symantec Intrusion Prevention add-on to IE8, and when you mentioned McAfee I went into my Norton Internet Settings and turned "Intrusion Prevention" off, just in case it did anything over and above disabling the Symantec Intrusion Prevention add-on.

Unfortunately I am still getting exactly the same behaviour. I am restarting IE after managing the add-ons.

If you have any other suggestions of what I could try I would be most grateful.

Paul

RE: Doesn't work on IE8 - paulsmith - 03-13-2010 03:27 AM

I just got it working. It was nothing to do with IE8, or Norton, or add-ons. This is what I did:
Set home page to about:blank on IE
Close IE
Open IE
Launch AOL Pagetest
Navigate to your page that you want to monitor

For some reason, the home page seems to need to be about:blank.

Cheers,
Paul

RE: Doesn't work on IE8 - pmeenan - 03-13-2010 04:22 AM

Hmm, thanks, I'll take a look at that. It just happens that that is what I use for my start page and I also use it as a way to reset pagetest so there may be something that isn't getting initialized if you never visit about:blank. Gives me a place to look :-)

RE: Doesn't work on IE8 - Larry.Rosenberg - 04-08-2010 09:31 AM

I've been using the online version for quite a while, and it's great, but now I'm attempting to use the desktop version (2.0.0.217). I have two workstations at my desk: one with IE7 and one with IE8. Both are running MS Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 3 (they're corporately managed). My IE7 workstation is able to utilize the desktop version fine (as long as I set my Home Page to "about:blank") but the IE8 workstation has issues.

When I enable the add-on, restart IE8, click on the AOL Pagetest icon, key "about:blank" into the address, <Enter>, enter my URL and <Enter>, the result is a blank page in the browser window, with "Done" indicated. The "AOL Pagetest" window shows only the original URL that was entered, and the Load Details tab shows: Error loading page: -2146697211 (0x800C0005).

At this point, my browser is unable to reach ANY URL. I keep receiving the message: Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage.

I have to go back into Manage Add-ons and disable AOL Pagetest to get it working again.

Have you encountered anything like this, and know a workaround?

Thanks,
Larry Rosenberg
Addendum to the previous post...HttpWatch was in the way. Disabling it allowed the browser to continue to work with AOL Pagetest enabled, but still no good results.

Now I'm seeing "Error loading page: 99997 (0x0001869D)" in the Load Details tab.

Thanks,
Larry Rosenberg

RE: Doesn't work on IE8 - pmeenan - 04-09-2010 06:01 AM

Do you get any results at all? What other browser plugins (if any) are enabled? I'd like to reproduce it - I don't think it's specific to IE8 because I have it in IE8 in several configs.

I'll also take a look and see why it doesn't play nicely with httpwatch - that may yield some clues to the overall issues.

RE: Doesn't work on IE8 - Larry.Rosenberg - 04-09-2010 06:23 AM

Yes, the page displays in the browser, but I only receive a single line (the URL) in the waterfall chart. In the checklist, the same line is present, with the headings for the other data, and "N/A" for everything on the same line as the URL, with the single exception of "100%" in the "Combine CSS/JS" column.

Sure, but that makes it kind of hard to test the site you are developing and see how it performs for your users that use IE. That was actually one of the initial reasons we built it because most of our developers use Firefox and nobody paid attention to how the sites performed in IE even though (at the time) 80+% of our page views were in IE.
