The page content fades in starting around 3 seconds and completes around 3.3 seconds.

There's LOTS of room for optimization with that template even if you didn't change the behavior. In particular, combining the different CSS and JS files into a much smaller number (same code, just merged together) would save 1/2-3/4 of a second. Beyond that takes actual coding to change how the images for the gallery load (they are all loading at the same time even though only one is visible).
